types of electrical cables

Types of electrical cables. Thicker cables are designed to carry larger currents than thinner ones. Electrical wires are usually copper because of its e cellent conductivity, although metals such as aluminium are also used. Simple, two-wire cables (left, far left) are commonly used in items such as speaker cables. Three-wire cables (right, far right) are used in situations that require the item to be earthed to prevent short circuits and electric shocks (eg. household appliances), and are colour-coded to ensure they are connected correctly (blue:neutral, brown:live, green and yellow:earth). All electrical cables are insulated within a plastic or rubber sheath. The amount of insulation depends on the intended use for the cable.
