Rib bruising. Fractured ribs and severe bruising on a 35-year-old man following an assault with an iron bar. The ribs are easily fractured by a fall or a blow. Severe pain results, which becomes worse when breathing deeply. Most rib fractures do not result in mis-alignment of the bone ends and heal easily without treatment other than painkillers. If bone is displaced by the fracture there is a risk that a lung may be pierced, which can lead to collapse of the damaged lung.
