PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA - 26 August 2009: Police open fire on protesting soldiers participating in an illegal march at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on Wednesday 26 August 2009. On Wednesday morning, the Pretoria High Court dismissed an application by the SA National Defence Union (Sanda) to allow the around 1000 members of the defence force to march to the Union Buildings in a protest over wages. Defence Minister Lindiwe Sisulu said that the High Court granted an interdict against the march, and soldiers were informed that taking place in the march was illegal, but Sandu went ahead with the march. The march descended into chaos when the protesting group tried to get onto the Union Buildings' property. Police used teargas and rubber bullets to try and disperse the crowd, who were taunting police and vandalizing vehicles, and in one instance threw a petrol bomb into a car.
